Midwest Bus Corporation is proud to announce a comprehensive remanufacturing project for four University of Michigan transit buses currently undergoing full restoration at our Owosso, Michigan headquarters. As the largest re-manufacturer of City Transit Buses in the United States, we are honored to partner with an institution known for excellence and innovation and to help extend the life of its fleet through our proven rebuild process.
This project represents far more than routine maintenance. It is a complete life-extension overhaul designed to maximize performance, safety, reliability, and long-term value.
A Complete Repower and Structural Renewal
Each of the four University of Michigan buses is receiving a complete repower of the engine and transmission. By replacing aging powertrain systems with upgraded components, we are restoring performance standards and ensuring dependable operation for years to come. Repowering provides the benefits of a new vehicle’s performance without the cost of full fleet replacement.
Beyond the drivetrain, the scope of work includes:
Full paint and body restoration
Ride control system upgrades for improved stability and passenger comfort
Comprehensive axle overhaul
Complete flooring replacement
These upgrades work together to deliver structural integrity, enhanced safety, improved ride quality, and a refreshed interior and exterior appearance. The result is a bus that performs like new and is prepared for many additional years of service.
A Proven Three-Phase Process
Every project at Midwest Bus follows our fully integrated three-phase approach: Planning, Production, and Inspection.
Planning Phase
Our team begins with a detailed evaluation of each bus. We assess mechanical systems, structural components, and client objectives to develop a customized rebuild plan. For this University of Michigan project, careful coordination ensures timelines, parts procurement, and production scheduling align seamlessly.
Production Phase
Inside our 70,000-square-foot facility in Owosso, our experienced technicians execute the rebuild. With a 35-bus production capability, Midwest Bus is equipped to handle multiple large-scale transit projects simultaneously. From drivetrain systems to structural repairs, all work is completed in-house using advanced equipment and proven remanufacturing standards.
Inspection Phase
Quality assurance is critical to everything we do. Each bus undergoes rigorous testing and inspection to verify safety, reliability, and performance before returning to service. Our inspection phase ensures every bus meets our high standards and our client’s expectations.
Extending Fleet Life. Maximizing Investment.
Transit agencies and institutions face increasing equipment costs and operational demands. Remanufacturing provides a strategic solution that extends service life while maximizing capital investment.
For the University of Michigan fleet, this project delivers:
Improved reliability
Enhanced safety and ride control
Structural and cosmetic renewal
Extended operational life
Long-term cost efficiency
Estimated completion for this project is March 2026, and we look forward to delivering four fully revitalized buses ready to serve students, faculty, and the community.
